What is Disc Brake?

What is Disc Brake? Why disc brakes have holes in it?

Let's gain some knowledge👀

It is pretty much obvious that brakes are used to stop the vehicle in motion. Hence you could imagine the amount of friction that acts between the brake pads and the walls of the discs.

Due to the first law of thermodynamics, the work done to stop the car produces heat (As a result of friction).

Disc Brake

There are different kinds of disc brakes. Some are drilled (Like your bike’s wheel). Some are slotted, some are patterned, and some are ventilated(Like your car). Now if you would look closer, you can see a slit along the circumference of the disc in the car.

WHY IS VENTILATED BETTER THAN DRILLED?

This is because, your bike might be producing only less than half of the heat produced by the discs in the car. More over, a car will have greater inertia of mass than a bike because of obvious reasons. Hence the discs must be able to take the load and provide better disc cooling.

Vented discs give better cooling as the heat is transferred to the surrounding radially from the disc. Also this prevents thermal damage to the brake pads too.
